“Be seen. Be heard”
Prada’s classic, elegant style has many devoted fans for good reason. With its designs, Prada embodies Italian elegance like few other houses. Classic shapes are wrapped in the finest materials and are always accented with touches of gold or silver. The bags are designed to be worn for different occasions and with a variety of outfits. A black Galleria looks just as good in the office as it does with edgy combinations and a leather jacket. Despite its long history, Prada feels fresher than ever today and continues to impress with distinctive special editions. Colourful prints on refined, softly glossy Saffiano are not uncommon and are especially sought-after collector’s items among fans.
Founded in 1913, the company first made its name with luxurious leather goods. From fine trunks to soft gloves, Prada offered elegant travel pieces for every weather. Originally founded as “Fratelli Prada” by the brothers Mario and Marino Prada, the company was appointed official supplier to the royal court in 1919. From the outset, the brand also offered handbags in the classic sense. After Mario Prada’s death in 1958, his daughter Luisa took over the company. In 1958, following the death of the company founder, his daughter Luisa assumed leadership. Twenty years later, she withdrew from the business and passed the management on to her three children. Under Miuccia Prada’s leadership, the company experienced a rebirth. What had once been a rather staid label soon became known for creative designs and experiments with different materials. The design of the new triangular logo also dates from this period. In 1984, the “Vela” backpack was introduced, made of black parachute silk and featuring the new logo, and the model became an immediate success. This heritage continues to be showcased today in Prada’s Tessuto collection.
Among the company’s most famous bags are undoubtedly those from the Galleria collection. Harmonious proportions and carefully considered details have made these bags bestsellers of the house to this day. Whether as an open Tote Bag for everyday use or as a mini version for evening occasions, there is a suitable style for every purpose. The bags are usually offered in Prada’s signature Saffiano leather. Other popular bags from the house are the small styles from the Cahier line. These bags are little works of art, and with their attention to detail and diary-inspired look, they are at once elegant and playful. Another classic from the house is the bags from Prada’s Tessuto collection. These bags were already in demand in the early 2000s and remain in production to this day; recently, re-editions have even been released. Their shape, colour and material choices also serve as inspiration for many young fashion chains. Hardly any major fashion house does not stock at least one Prada Tessuto copy on its shelves.
Saffiano leather is Prada’s proprietary leather variant. It stands out for its fine cross-hatched texture and matte sheen. Saffiano leather is offered in a range of colours and, alongside the logo, is one of the company’s defining hallmarks.
Prada’s Vitello Daino leather is characterised by a natural, distinctly visible grain. It is softer and more supple than the well-known Saffiano leather and is regarded as another popular signature leather of the House. In particular, Tote bags appear more elegant thanks to the softer drape, while the material remains suitable for everyday wear and highly durable. Vitello Daino is produced in numerous shades, though black and brown versions are the most common.
